This season, I’ve decided to participate in the Fall 2022 One Room Challenge (ORC)! It conveniently coincides with our renovation schedule for our next project, so I figured I may as well participate too! It is an 8-week ‘challenge’ where designers and DIYers from all over transform a space in their homes and share the behind-the-scenes process!

If you’re subscribed to our newsletter, you’ve already got a sneak peek of the room we’ll be transforming: our Primary Bedroom!! Over the next 8 weeks, we will turn our boring and bland primary bedroom into a peaceful oasis. So today, I’m sharing our primary bedroom mood board, before photos, and renovation plan, so let’s get started!

Did I mention bland and boring already?

To me, a bedroom should be a relaxing retreat to unwind in at the end of the day. Our bedroom, however, is minimal… and not in a good way. So, I am so excited to give our bedroom the much-needed attention it deserves!

Design Plan & Renovation Ideas:

  • Accent wall. (Seriously, I love accent walls; I just can’t get enough of them!)
  • Wire & install wall sconces. I can’t decide if I want to do plug-in lights or hard-wire them; we’ll play that by ear. (P.S. I already purchased the fixtures, and I’m crossing my fingers I like them – they’re still in the box in the dining room, LOL.)
  • Relocate the outlets on our headboard wall. They’re behind the bed and really annoying to get to, so they’re getting moved.
  • Build a headboard & storage bed frame. We don’t have a headboard right now, and we need one, stat! And we could always use extra storage, so we’ll build one of those frames with drawers under the mattress!
  • Build bookshelves. Two bookshelves. Each side of the window.
  • Build nightstands. I can’t explain how inconvenient it is to have a nightstand 8″ below the top of the mattress. Our mattress is absurdly thick, and we are in dire need of some taller nightstands. I’m going to build these, eek! I’m really nervous about it, but I want to get into more furniture pieces, so there is no better time to start, right? …Right?
  • Do we really need a long dresser? We’ve talked about building a custom closet organization for our closet, so we’re I’m hoping to not need a dresser in the bedroom; that’s the intent, at least. Maybe a fireplace instead?
  • New bedding. Remember that absurdly thick mattress I was referring to earlier? Yeah, we need bedding that actually fits the bed…
  • Décor & accessories!

Simple enough, right?

I’ll be honest, I’m a bit nervous. We have a lot of DIY furniture pieces happening, so here’s to hoping everything will go smoothly. (You know it won’t. I know it won’t. But we’re going to pretend it will…)

We’re going to start with the accent wall, electrical, and sconces so we can quickly see significant changes and have a usable room right away! But here’s the vibe we’re going for:

We’re going for a rustic and natural space with a touch of an industrial/modern vibe – is that a thing? Modern, clean lines, but cozy. Metals. Wood tones. Greenery. Relaxing.

An Oasis.
